Transport 50 years ago

Transport has changed a lot since the 1950s. Now we are using cars instead of carriages. More people buy cars now because they are a lot cheaper.

How fast could cars go?
The speed limit was around 15km per hour. But some places you could go faster or slower. Sometimes you can go on your bike. If you go too fast on your bike you can still get a ticket from the police.

Who had cars and how long did it take to get a car?
Only the rich had cars. You could not just go to the car shop like you can now. You had to order it at the garage and then a letter goes away to the government. A man there had to say yes and then it could take up to 2-3 years to get a car.

How did the kids get to school in town?
The kids in the town walked to school in groups without adults. A large number of children walked to school in bare feet. When the kids were little they rode trikes and when they got older they rode bikes.

What was the most popular way to get to school?
Most people rode pushbikes to school everyday and most of it was up hill. Country kids came on the bus to school in the morning. The country kids did not have to go to school on snowy days. Transport is better now because you can get around to places on time without leaving really early.
