TOTARA ESTATE MACHINERY |
|||
This is about machinery in Totara Estate. This is near Oamaru which is in New Zealand. Oamaru is just south of Timaru and north of Dunedin. 5 minutes drive south of Oamaru is a place called Totara Estate on the left. Totara Estate is an old meat house and is now a place where old machinery is kept. It is an interesting place to visit. |

THE COMPANIES Read and Grays started here in Oamaru in the 1870s. They first made single furrow ploughs. America and England were popular because a lot of machinery came by ship to New Zealand. There were also International, McCormick, Deering, Massey Harris and Ferguson. Companies were placed close together so they did not have to transport the machinery very far and farmers had a bigger range. |

WHEN THE MANAGER FIRST CAME Totara Estate started with the machinery they had brought with them when they first came to New Zealand. They copied them to make more as more workers came to work machinery. |

HOW DID MACHINERY HELP TOTARA
ESTATE? Heading gave them grain to feed horses and was turned into flour. Raising sheep gave them meat and it was also shipped to other countries. |
