Applebys has always been a family business. J.H. Appleby was born in 1869 in London. He came to New Zealand on a ship called "The Margaret Galbraith" in1880. Mr Appleby established his business in Palmerston in 1898. The building burnt down in 1914 and it was rebuilt that same year. J.H. Appleby's grandsons Doug and Des Appleby still run the business today. It is situated on the main street of Palmerston opposite the Information Centre. The shop originally ran as a cycle and fancy goods business. Today it is a gift shop selling books, magazines, balls, toys, stationary, fishing equipment, ornaments, greeting cards and lots more. The perfect shop to pop into if your after a birthday present for someone!!!!! |
