The Bellevue Viaduct was constructed in 1885 and traversed the gully for the Wellington and Manawatu Rail Company. The viaduct was seen as one of the great engineering achievements of the 19th century. It was the largest wooden structure of its kind! You can see some of the foundations near the Mark Avenue entrance to Seton Nossiter Park.
The railway opened up the northern suburbs of Wellington City and it provided access to Horowhenua and Manawatu. Later it was part of the Northern Main Trunk Line.
