A survey of our Indian Students' favourite sports
Sports Questionaire
In India, hockey is the National Sport but Cricket is by far the favourite. Would this still be the case amongst Indian students at Marcellin College? I decided to do a survey to see what their favourite sports are. This is survey showed us that 9 out of 20 Indians have cricket as their favourite sport. It also showed us that only 1 out of the 20 prefers playing the traditional Indian sport of Kabadi.
The result:
Out of 20 students surveyed 9 chose cricket as their favourite sport.
Two chose it as their second favourite sport.
We think this is because cricket is India’s most popular sport, and everyone in India plays it in their spare time.
Five students chose hockey as their favourite sport.
We think this is because this is India’s national sport. Although many people do not play the sport in India, they know that hockey is India’s national sport and once they come to a country such as New Zealand, they get a chance to play the sport.
Two students chose a traditional Indian game called Kabadi (one as their first choice, the other as their second choice)
We think this is because the Indians with more muscle would prefer playing sports in which they have to use power. Therefore, only a few people prefer playing the traditional sport of Kabadi.
More girls than boys chose hockey (three to one)
We think this is because cricket is a sport which girls prefer not to play due to the long hours and the large amount of running. Therefore, hockey is a shorter timed sport with equal running.
Only one student (a girl) mentioned rugby .
We think this is because rugby is a sport which involves a lot of contact, and most girls do not prefer sport in which they have to use large amounts of contact. Therefore, they prefer not playing rugby.
Our conclusions:
9 out of 20 Indians living in New Zealand list cricket as their favourite sport. Also, we learnt that only 1 out of 20 Indians living in New Zealand mention rugby as their first or second sport.
