Waro Lake
The Waro rocks are limestone and must have been under the ocean for millions of years as all kind of fossils have been found in them from sharks’ teeth to the bones of fish. The rocks were covered in trees and when a big fire started the native trees were burnt off the Waro rocks.
In Waro before 1900 all the rocks were covered and surrounded with native trees. Two streams of water ran from the rocks to form a large swamp which was well stocked with wild bird life.
Quarry Floods
Before Lake Waro was a lake it was a quarry where people got their coal and limestone. There were no underground tunnels it was only an open pit mine. There were two rivers that kept flowing into the pit and flooding it. It became too much of a hassle so they left it and Lake Waro was formed.
