Welcome to our website about our irrigation inquiry unit.
Did you know that New Zealand started using irrigation in the 1800’s on a small scale? The first type of irrigation used in New Zealand was wild flood. Wild flood is where water flows down a water race. When the water race is full the water floods over the side of the race and goes anywhere in the paddock, beacuse there are no border dykes to control the direction of the water.
We are a Year Six, Seven and Eight class at Duntroon School. We chose to investigate irrigation as our topic because we discovered water is very precious to farming around Duntroon. When we began we did not know much about the irrigation systems and schemes in our local area, but now we do.
Here you can see three types of irrigation working.
