Our team
We are the Year 5&6 Team at Paremata School, in Porirua. Our school goes from Year 1-8.
Every term our team learns about different topics during our inquiry time. In term one we learnt about marine reserves and we got to go snorkeling twice in the sea. In term two we learnt about healthy food. Did you know that oranges contain as much fibre as five cups of cornflakes?
This term we have been learning about Turangawaewae, Our Place, which is all about Porirua’s history. Did you know that Te Rauparaha was Te Rangihaeata’s uncle?
We put on our glasses of the past and went on a bus tour around many historic places in Porirua. This included visiting an old whaling station in Titahi Bay, Te Rangihaeata’s last fighting pa in Pauatahanui and viewing the remains of what was Porirua’s tallest building, the Paremata Barracks. On this trip we not only got to pretend we were whalers, we also got to put on our marching shoes and pretend we were soldiers in the 59th Regiment.
The following pages share more information about all the fascinating things we discovered.
