  • Understand how early Polynesian and British migrations to New Zealand have continuing significance for tangatawhenua and communities.

  • Understand how that events have cause and effects.
  • Understand how exploration and innovation create opportunities and challenges for people, places and environments.

Students will :

  • be positive in their identity and know they are connected to the land and the environment
  • see themselves as members of the community, actively seeking, using, and creating knowledge.

  • acknowledge the bicultural foundations of Aotearoa, New Zealand
  • value the histories and traditions of its entire people
  • make connections with the wider community.

Students will:

  • value a curiosity of the local area and use an inquiry process to learn about the diverse changes over time to the environment.

Key competences

  • Students will think critically to make sense of the information while developing an understanding of their changing community.
  • Their intellectually curiosity will lead them to ask questions about life in the past.
  • Their sense of belonging to a community will be enhanced as they begin to understand their place in the community.

Future focus

Students will look to the future by reflecting on the past and exploring ideas of globalization.

Deeper understandings

  • Our community is constantly changing and evolving to meet the needs of time.
  • Before the present community was here the tangatawhenua were here and are still here.
  • How we live now is effected by everything that came before it.

Acquisition of knowledge and skills

  • That we can find out about the past in a variety of different ways and evaluate the reliability of these sources
  • A knowledge of historically locally significant landmarks and other indicators of the past.
