I did this because I like playing rugby and I enjoy playing sports.
Colonel Nicholas donated the bowling green, where some enthusiastic locals built the bowling club and green. Originally the bowling club was handed over to the Maheno Hall Trust and still is. There was a men’s and women’s team. The woman’s team started in 1938. The bowling club closed in 1941-1949 for the war because most of the men went away to fight in World War 2. There was also an indoor bowling club in the Maheno hall and then there was the main outdoor green by the clubrooms. The indoor club at one stage had between 30-40 people playing for them.
The Maheno Rugby Club was first opened in 1896 and there were clubrooms built. They built new clubrooms in 1980 because of a flood but just after they had built the new ones there was a big flood that flooded right through the clubrooms. There is a mark on the bar where the water got up to. The old clubrooms are now the changing rooms. In 1921 Maheno Rugby Club joined the North Otago competition and won the shield. They also won in 1946 when they combined with Excelsior, 1961,1963,1989 and 1990.
In 1994 a women’s rugby team started and they played the Dunedin teams but it stopped 4 or 5 years later. These are the people from the local area who went on to play for the All Blacks: Jack Finlay, Colin Gillies, J.M Taylor, John Hotop (from Kakanui), Jeff Matheson.

The green and black supporters
Are a loyal and hardy bunch
And every winter Saturday
Just shortly after lunch
They head down to the rugby ground
Dressed in their woolly coats
They came by car, but on this day
They must have come in boats
They crowded into the grandstand
Or gather on the line
To cheer for the Maheno boys
Come rain hail or shine.
